China's November 2018 Domestic Handset Shipments Down 18.2% YoY

A total of 35.37 mln mobile handsets were shipped in China in November 2018, down 18.2% YoY and 8.2% MoM, according to new figures released by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT), a department of China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).

Of total shipments in November, 33.58 mln were 4G handsets, down 16.9% YoY, 70,000 were 3G handsets, and 1.72 mln were 2G handsets.

In the 11-month period from Jan-Nov 2018, a total of 378.57 mln mobile handsets were shipped in China, down 15.6% YoY. Of this total, 357.85 mln were 4G handsets, down 15.2% YoY, 0.22 mln were 3G handsets, and 20.49 mln were 2G handsets.

A total of 30.55 mln handsets from domestic handset brands were shipped in China in November, down 17.9% YoY, accounting for 86.4% of total handset shipments. Shipments of smartphones comprised 33.30 mln, or 94.1%, of total handsets shipped in China in November. Of total smartphone shipments during the month, 86.5% were Android-based smartphones.

In the 11-month period from Jan-Nov 2018, 338.60 mln handsets from domestic handset brands were shipped in China, down 15.4% YoY, accounting for 89.4% of total handset shipments.

During the same 11-month period, shipments of smartphones comprised 356.42 mln, or 94.1%, of total handsets shipped in China. Of total smartphone shipments during the period, 89.0% were Android-based smartphones. The top 10 smartphone makers by shipment volume in China from Jan-Nov 2018 accounted for a combined 92.8% of smartphone shipments in China during the 11-month period, up 7.7 percentage points from the same period in 2017.

During the month of November, 39 new handset models were released in China, of which 33 were 4G models and 6 were 2G models. Of the total new handset models released in November, 32, or 82.1%, were smartphone models. In the 11-month period from Jan-Nov 2018, 722 new handset models were released in China, down 25.1% YoY; of this total, 553 were 4G models, 3 were 3G models, and 166 were 2G models. Of the total new handset models released from Jan-Nov 2018, 551, or 76.3%, were smartphone models.

Editor's Note: CAICT's statistics cover domestically produced, domestically shipped handsets from both Chinese and foreign brands, but do not include imported handsets or exports of domestically produced units. Only handsets shipped through official channels are included, meaning grey market or "shanzhai" handsets are not covered in CAICT's figures. "Shipped" means only that the manufacturer shipped the handset to a wholesaler or retailer, where it may or may not have been sold to a consumer during the month under discussion.
