China's April 2019 Domestic Handset Shipments Up 6.7% YoY

A total of 36.53 mln mobile handsets were shipped in China in April 2019, up 6.7% YoY and 28.7% MoM, according to new figures released by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT), a department of China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).
Of total shipments in April, 34.85 mln were 4G handsets, up 6.6% YoY, 12,000 were 3G handsets, and 1.67 mln were 2G handsets.
In the 4-month period from Jan-Apr 2019, a total of 113.5 mln mobile handsets were shipped in China, down 6.7% YoY. Of this total, 108.16 mln were 4G handsets, down 5.6% YoY, 57,000 were 3G handsets, and 5.24 mln were 2G handsets.
A total of 33.93 mln handsets from domestic handset brands were shipped in China in April, up 7.2% YoY, accounting for 92.9% of total handset shipments. Shipments of smartphones comprised 34.79 mln, or 95.2%, of total handsets shipped in China in April. Of total smartphone shipments during the month, 92.7% were Android-based smartphones.
In the 4-month period from Jan-Apr 2019, 105 mln handsets from domestic handset brands were shipped in China, down 2.5% YoY, accounting for 92.4% of total handset shipments. During the same 4-month period, shipments of smartphones comprised 108 mln, or 95.1%, of total handsets shipped in China. Of total smartphone shipments during the period, 92.5% were Android-based smartphones.
During the month, 42 new handset models were released in China, of which 35 were 4G models and 7 were 2G models. Of the total new handset models released in April, 34, or 81.0%, were smartphone models. In the 4-month period from Jan-Apr 2019, 167 new handset models were released in China, down 36.0% YoY; of this total, 135 were 4G models, 1 was a 3G model, and 31 were 2G models. Of the total new handset models released from Jan-Apr 2019, 132, or 79.0%, were smartphone models.

Only handsets shipped through official channels are included, meaning grey market or "shanzhai" handsets are not covered in CAICT's figures. "Shipped" means only that the manufacturer shipped the handset to a wholesaler or retailer, where it may or may not have been sold to a consumer during the month under discussion.
