China's May 2019 Domestic Handset Shipments Up 1.2% YoY

A total of 38.29 mln mobile handsets were shipped in China in May 2019, up 1.2% YoY and 4.8% MoM, according to new figures released by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT), a department of China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).

Of total shipments in May, 36.48 mln were 4G handsets, up 1.2% YoY, and 1.82 mln were 2G handsets.

In the 5-month period from Jan-May 2019, a total of 151.8 mln mobile handsets were shipped in China, down 4.8% YoY. Of this total, 144.64 mln were 4G handsets, down 4.0% YoY, 57,000 were 3G handsets, and 7.06 mln were 2G handsets.

A total of 34.96 mln handsets from domestic handset brands were shipped in China in May, up 2.7% YoY, accounting for 91.3% of total handset shipments. Shipments of smartphones comprised 36.44 mln, or 95.1%, of total handsets shipped in China in May. Of total smartphone shipments during the month, 90.5% were Android-based smartphones.

In the 5-month period from Jan-May 2019, 140 mln handsets from domestic handset brands were shipped in China, down 1.3% YoY, accounting for 92.1% of total handset shipments. During the same 5-month period, shipments of smartphones comprised 144 mln, or 95.1%, of total handsets shipped in China. Of total smartphone shipments during the period, 92.0% were Android-based smartphones.

During the month of May, 41 new handset models were released in China, of which 34 were 4G models and 7 were 2G models. Of the total new handset models released in May, 33, or 80.5%, were smartphone models. In the 5-month period from Jan-May 2019, 208 new handset models were released in China, down 35.6% YoY; of this total, 169 were 4G models, 1 was a 3G model, and 38 were 2G models. Of the total new handset models released from Jan-May 2019, 165, or 79.3%, were smartphone models.

Editor's Note: CAICT's statistics cover domestically produced, domestically shipped handsets from both Chinese and foreign brands, but do not include imported handsets or exports of domestically produced units. Only handsets shipped through official channels are included, meaning grey market or "shanzhai" handsets are not covered in CAICT's figures. "Shipped" means only that the manufacturer shipped the handset to a wholesaler or retailer, where it may or may not have been sold to a consumer during the month under discussion.
