China's June 2019 Domestic Handset Shipments Down 6.3% YoY

A total of 34.31 mln mobile handsets were shipped in China in June 2019, down 6.3% YoY and 10.4% MoM, according to new figures released by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT), a department of China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).
Of total shipments in June, 33.26 mln were 4G handsets, down 5.2% YoY, and 1.05 mln were 2G handsets.
In the 6-month period from Jan-Jun 2019, a total of 186.1 mln mobile handsets were shipped in China, down 5.1% YoY. Of this total, 177.9 mln were 4G handsets, down 4.2% YoY, 57,000 were 3G handsets, and 8.11 mln were 2G handsets.
A total of 32.68 mln handsets from domestic handset brands were shipped in China in June, down 4.1% YoY, accounting for 95.2% of total handset shipments. Shipments of smartphones comprised 33.22 mln, or 96.8%, of total handsets shipped in China in June. Of total smartphone shipments during the month, 95.6% were Android-based smartphones.
In the 6-month period from Jan-Jun 2019, 172.4 mln handsets from domestic handset brands were shipped in China, down 1.8% YoY, accounting for 92.7% of total handset shipments. During the same 6-month period, shipments of smartphones comprised 177.5 mln, or 95.4%, of total handsets shipped in China. Of total smartphone shipments during the period, 92.7% were Android-based smartphones.
During the month of June, 38 new handset models were released in China, of which 1 was a 5G model, 28 were 4G models and 9 were 2G models. Of the total new handset models released in June, 27, or 71.1%, were smartphone models. In the 6-month period from Jan-Jun 2019, 246 new handset models were released in China, down 38.0% YoY; of this total, 1 was a 5G model, 197 were 4G models, 1 was a 3G model, and 47 were 2G models. Of the total new handset models released from Jan-Jun 2019, 192, or 78.0%, were smartphone models, of which all were Android models.
Editor's Note: CAICT's statistics cover domestically produced, domestically shipped handsets from both Chinese and foreign brands, but do not include imported handsets or exports of domestically produced units. Only handsets shipped through official channels are included, meaning grey market or "shanzhai" handsets are not covered in CAICT's figures. "Shipped" means only that the manufacturer shipped the handset to a wholesaler or retailer, where it June or June not have been sold to a consumer during the month under discussion.
