Guangdong Leads China with 4G Penetration of 88% in August 2020
MIIT, 9/21/20
China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has released statistics detailing the country's total number of fixed-line telephone subscribers (registered accounts) and mobile subscribers by province as of the end of August 2020. China finished the month with over 184 mln fixed-line subs and more than 1.598 bln mobile subs.
The five provinces with the highest penetration of 4G users among their respective mobile subscriber bases were Guangdong with 87.7%, followed by Qinghai (84.9%), Henan (83.4%), Guangxi (83.3%), and Ningxia (83.0%). The provinces with the lowest 4G penetration were Xinjiang (57.9%), Yunnan (76.9%), Shandong (77.1%), Shanghai (77.5%), and Sichuan (77.8%). The MIIT did not break out figures for 5G subscriber totals or penetration rates. As 5G uptake accelerates, 4G penetration has dropped significantly in many of China's more affluent provinces; in Shanghai, for example, 4G penetration remained at a peak of 91% from August to November 2019, but now has dropped down to 77.5%.
