Alibaba: Tmall's Exploration of Online Direct Sales Model Will Not See Name Change

Guanchazhe, 2/19/22

Contrary to recent reports in China's online media, Tmall, the B2C e-commerce platform of Chinese internet conglomerate Alibaba Group (NYSE: BABA; 9988.HK), will not be renamed to Maoxiang, a manager at Alibaba's China Digital Commerce unit said yesterday evening in an interview with local Chinese media outlet Guanchazhe. The source did confirm, however, that Alibaba was working on a project called Maoxiang, adding that it was just an exploratory project within the Tmall app.

On February 16, Chinese local media LatePost had reported that Alibaba's B2C retail business group was working on a new project to launch Tmall self-operated flagship stores. The report added that the project would focus on big brands, initially in the 3C category, and would be officially launched through an updating and renaming of the Tmall mobile app to Maoxiang.
