MIIT Releases China's Mar 2023 Fixed-Line, Mobile User Totals by Province

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has released statistics detailing the country's total number of fixed-line telephone subscribers (registered accounts) and mobile subscribers by province as of the end of March 2023. China finished the month with over 178 mln fixed-line subs and more than 1.705 bln mobile subs. The March totals represent a net decrease of 0.99 mln fixed-line subs and net increase of 21.61 mln mobile subs compared to the end of December 2022.
Among total mobile subs, 5G handset subs accounted for 620.0 mln, or 36.4%.
The five provinces with the highest penetration of 5G handset subs among their respective mobile subscriber bases were Qinghai with 42.9%, followed by Ningxia (41.9%), Guangdong (41.5%), Zhejiang (39.8%), and Hainan (39.6%). The five provinces with the lowest penetration of 5G handset subs among their respective mobile subscriber bases were Tibet (30.5%), Liaoning (32.1%), Xinjiang (32.1%), Shanghai (32.7%), and Jilin (33.6%).
The five provinces accounting for the greatest proportion of China's total 5G handset subs, or 36.8% combined, were Guangdong (11.3%), Jiangsu (6.6%), Henan (6.5%), Shandong (6.5%), and Zhejiang (5.9%).
