MIIT Releases China's May 2023 Fixed-Line, Mobile User Totals by Province

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has released statistics detailing the country's total number of fixed-line telephone subscribers (registered accounts) and mobile subscribers by province as of the end of May 2023. China finished the month with over 177 mln fixed-line subs and nearly 1.708 bln mobile subs. The May totals represent a net decrease of 2.01 mln fixed-line subs and net increase of 24.45 mln mobile subs compared to the end of December 2022.
Among total mobile subs, 5G handset subs accounted for 651.4 mln, or 38.1%, representing a net increase of 109.18 mln 5G handset subs since the end of 2022.
The five provinces with the highest penetration of 5G handset subs among their respective mobile subscriber bases were Qinghai with 45.7%, followed by Ningxia (43.9%), Guangdong (42.9%), Hainan (42.3%), and Beijing (41.2%). The five provinces with the lowest penetration of 5G handset subs among their respective mobile subscriber bases were Tibet (32.9%), Shanghai (33.9%), Hebei (34.0%), Liaoning (34.2%), and Xinjiang (35.2%).
The five provinces accounting for the greatest proportion of China's total 5G handset subs, or 36.5% combined, were Guangdong (11.2%), Henan (6.5%), Shandong (6.5%), Jiangsu (6.4%), and Zhejiang (5.8%).
