China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) mobile terminal subsidiary Unicom Huasheng Telecommunications Technology will soon bring another WCDMA Android-based handset to the market, Samsung's Galaxy I6500U. Beginning on March 29, the handset will be available for online preorder through Unicom Huasheng's e-commerce partner 360Buy. The official release date, to be announced soon, is expected to be within one or two weeks. The I6500U can access the internet via WCMDA, Wi-Fi, and WAPI networks. The phone will come installed with the latest version of the Android smartphone operating system, Android 2.1, will feature a fully-functional web browser, and come preconfigured for many commercial e-mail systems. In addition, the I6500U has a full-body touchscreen, and has an accelerometer that allows for quick switching between vertical and horizontal screen layouts.
According to informed sources, China Unicom will release 200 WCDMA 3G handsets this year.
