At the recent New Year celebrations held by Baidu (Nasdaq: BIDU) subsidiary video site Qiyi, a representative of the site revealed that Qiyi will be launching the Qitan user community (qitan.qiyi.com) at the end of January. The site will also be transitioning to a paid video revenue model in the first half of 2011, and has already begun recruiting personnel with the appropriate expertise.
Based on screenshots that have been released, Qitan will be an interactive community for video sharing with an interface similar to Sina Weibo. Users will be able to upload pictures, publish messages, and share videos, though for the time being it is uncertain whether sharable videos will be restricted to those on the Qiyi site.
Zhu Jiang, former assistant to the president of paid video site Voole, was spotted at the New Year celebrations, where he revealed to media that he would be joining Qiyi to take responsibility for paid video marketing.
