Cheng Lixin, CEO of Chinese telecom equipment and terminal manufacturer ZTE's (0763.HK; 000063.SZ) US-based subsidiary, ZTE USA, revealed today that ZTE will more than double the size of its product line for the North American market with a series of low-end smartphones in a bid to grow market share. Cheng said that an advantage of ZTE's low-cost smartphones is that operators will not need to heavily subsidize them. Cheng added that many of the handsets will be sold by major US operators with ZTE's brand.
ZTE released 14 handsets in the US last year, including 11 models specifically for the US market. While some US operators such as Verizon and Sprint carry ZTE feature phones, the majority of ZTE products are available through second-tier operators, a number of them lacking the ZTE brand.
