Sina Tech, 5/15/12
An industry source claimed recently that China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) has launched its Q2 2012 handset tender, in which it seeks to procure 6 mln TD-SCDMA handsets, including 2.4 mln units of three mass-market smartphones, a projected 1.6 mln units of two multimedia smartphones, and 2 mln units of two feature phones. Over the coming two days, mobile handset makers will submit their responses to the tender. A dozen or more manufacturers are participating in the tender, in which China Mobile will procure a total of seven TD-SCDMA handset models - meaning less than one handset model per manufacturer, on average, leading some manufacturers to complain about their odds.
As of April, China Mobile's terminal industry chain had grown to include 259 companies, including 150 companies investing in handset R&D and nine companies providing commercial-grade chip solutions.
