WeChat-based Identity Card Pilots in Guangzhou, to Expand Nationwide in January

Southern Metropolitan News, 12/25/17

Chinese internet conglomerate Tencent (0700.HK), in concert with more than ten Chinese government and commercial organizations including the Guangzhou Public Security Bureau's Nansha district office and China Construction Bank, recently formed a new "Weijing Yun Lianmeng" ("WeChat-Police Cloud Alliance") in Guangzhou to develop a national WeChat-based identity card system called "Wang Zheng" (literally "Network ID"). The system is being pilot-tested in Guangdong province and is expected to launch nationwide in January 2018.

Guangdong users can register with the Wang Zheng system online through a WeChat applet called "Wang Zheng CTID." Users can fill in information including their name, national identity card number, phone number and verification code, and then use either facial scanning or voice recognition confirmation to complete the registration process and add an online Wang Zheng identification card to their WeChat card wallet. The Wang Zheng card is a black and white document by default, but it can be upgraded to color by visiting a customer service outlet.

The basic Wang Zheng identification card can be used for simple transactions such as hotel check-in and Internet cafe registration scenarios. The upgraded card can also be used for transactions with stricter requirements, such as business registration processes.
