Changjiang, Taiwanese Chip Makers Ally in Bid to Become Apple's Top Memory Supplier
Jiweinet, 4/30/18
Memory chip maker Changjiang Storage Technology, a subsidiary of state-backed private equity firm Tsinghua Unigroup, has recruited Taiwanese chip manufacturers Phison Electronics, Siliconware Precision Industries, and ChipMOS Technologies into a memory industry alliance in order to expand its manufacturing capacity. This is the first large-scale cross-straits partnership in the memory chip industry. The goal of the alliance is to replace Korean vendors such as Samsung in Apple's memory chip supply chain.
Changjiang Storage has already brought its main product, NAND Flash, into mass production with significant financial support.
Changjiang Storage will strive to hit a monthly quota of 300,000 12-inch wafers at its Wuhan plant. Chip encapsulation will be performed by ChipmOS and Siliconware's mainland subsidiaries.
