Rumor: China Mobile Secures Regional IPTV License for Guangdong
Beijing Business Today, 6/15/18
Telecom operator China Mobile's (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) Guangdong branch has reportedly received official approval to operate IPTV transmission services, according to a source at the company speaking with media outlet Beijing Business Today. China Mobile's IPTV business is also expected to be approved by officials in other operating regions in the near future.
The National Radio and Television Administration (NRTA) has adopted a province-by-province management approach for approving and issuing IPTV transmission service licenses for China Mobile's IPTV business, mainly because China Mobile's local TV business operations in each province include both Internet TV (i.e. over-the -top or "OTT") and IPTV services. The special approach is intended to improve screening processes and to help China Mobile's television business transition to IPTV more rapidly.
Guangdong Mobile is one of the most important branches in China Mobile's nationwide system. During peak periods, Guangdong Mobile operating revenues account for nearly one-third of China Mobile's total operating revenues.
