China's Domestic Handset Market Sees 5.4 Mln 5G Shipments in Dec 2019

A total of 30.44 mln mobile handsets were shipped in China in December 2019, down 14.7% YoY and 12.6% MoM, according to new figures released by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT), a department of China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).
Of total shipments in December, 5.41 mln were 5G handsets, 23.57 mln were 4G handsets, and 1.46 mln were 2G handsets.
In the 12-month period from Jan-Dec 2019, a total of 388.6 mln mobile handsets were shipped in China, down 6.2% YoY. Of this total, 13.77 mln were 5G handsets, 358.7 mln were 4G handsets, 58,000 were 3G handsets, and 16.1 mln were 2G handsets.
A total of 26.61 mln handsets from domestic handset brands were shipped in China in December, down 17.3% YoY, accounting for 87.4% of total handset shipments. Shipments of smartphones comprised 28.93 mln, down 13.7% YoY and accounting for 95.0% of total handsets shipped in China in December. Of total smartphone shipments during the month, 89.0% were Android-based smartphones.
In the 12-month period from Jan-Dec 2019, 352.5 mln handsets from domestic handset brands were shipped in China, down 4.9% YoY, accounting for 90.7% of total handset shipments. During the same 12-month period, shipments of smartphones comprised 371.7 mln, or 95.6%, of total handsets shipped in China. Of total smartphone shipments during the period, 91.2% were Android-based smartphones.
During the month of December, 35 new handset models were released in China, of which 11 were 5G models, 17 were 4G models and 7 were 2G models. Of the total new handset models released in December, 27, or 77.1%, were smartphone models. In the 12-month period from Jan-Dec 2019, 573 new handset models were released in China, down 25.0% YoY; of this total, 35 were 5G models, 399 were 4G models, 1 was a 3G model, and 138 were 2G models. Of the total new handset models released from Jan-Dec 2019, 424, or 74.0%, were smartphone models, of which 415, or 97.9%, were Android models.

Only handsets shipped through official channels are included, meaning grey market or "shanzhai" handsets are not covered in CAICT's figures. "Shipped" means only that the manufacturer shipped the handset to a wholesaler or retailer, where it may or may not have been sold to a consumer during the month under discussion.
