China Mobile Adds Over 15 Mln 5G Subscribers in September 2020

China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) has announced its subscriber totals for the month of September 2020, with a net increase of 0.28 mln mobile subscribers, raising the telecom operator's total mobile user base to 946.18 mln. Of this total, 769.52 mln were 4G subscribers and 113.59 mln were 5G subscribers, representing net increases of 2.49 mln and 15.44 mln, respectively, compared to the previous month.

China Mobile defines a 5G package customer as a mobile customer who has subscribed to 5G tariff plans. Customers sharing 5G tariff plans without subscription are not included in the operator's 5G subscriber totals.

China Mobile added 3.35 mln new fixed-line broadband subscribers (registered accounts) in September, increasing its total fixed-line broadband user base to 204.21 mln.

China Mobile also reported that during the first three quarters of the year, the company's handset data traffic increased by 35.0% year-on-year to 65.3 bln GB with handset data DOU (average handset data traffic per user per month) reaching 9.1 GB. Total voice usage dropped by 7.1% year-on-year to 2.258 trln minutes, showing a further reduced rate of decline. Total SMS usage rose by 15.5% year-on-year to 713.0 bln messages and maintained favorable growth. Mobile ARPU continued to demonstrate a flattened rate of decline, dropping by 2.6% year-on-year to RMB 48.9 for the first three quarters of the year. Wireline broadband ARPU amounted to RMB 32.4.
