MIIT: China's 5G Handset Subscriber Base Up 18.6 Mln in November 2022

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has released its national telecom industry statistics for the month of November 2022. China's total number of mobile service subscribers increased by 2.03 mln during the period to reach over 1.684 bln, with the total 5G handset subscriber base rising 18.63 mln to reach over 542 mln.

Editor's Note: The accounting methods used by the MIIT in calculating China's telecom industry statistics differ from those used by China's telecom operators. As a result, the figures reported by the MIIT for any given month typically do not match the aggregate totals reported by China's three main telecom operators for the same month. In addition, the 5G statistics reported by the operators represent all 5G package subscribers, while those reported by the MIIT represent the number of subscribers with both 5G service plans and compatible handsets, which are much lower than the package counts.
