China's November 2023 Domestic Handset Shipments Up 34% YoY, 7% MoM

A total of 31.21 mln mobile handsets were shipped in China in November 2023, up 34.3% YoY and 7.0% MoM, according to new figures released by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT), a department of China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).
Of total shipments in November, 27.09 mln, or 86.8%, were 5G handsets, 4.08 mln, or 13.1%, were 4G handsets, and the remaining 0.04 mln, or 0.1%, were 3G and 2G handsets. Note that CAICT breaks out shipment figures only for 5G and 4G models, to the nearest 1,000 units and 10,000 units, respectively; accordingly, the 3G/2G figures we have provided here are calculated using CAICT's total, 5G, and 4G figures, and may include a rounding error of up to 10,000 units.
In the 11-month period from Jan-Nov 2023, a total of 260.84 mln mobile handsets were shipped in China, up 7.1% YoY. Of this total, 215.24 mln, or 82.5%, were 5G handsets, 44.62 mln, or 17.1%, were 4G handsets, and the remaining 0.98 mln, or 0.4%, were 3G and 2G handsets.
A total of 25.44 mln handsets from domestic handset brands were shipped in China in November, up 26.5% YoY and 41.2% MoM, accounting for 81.5% of total handset shipments. Shipments of smartphones comprised 29.86 mln units, up 34.4% YoY and 5.9% MoM, and accounting for 95.7% of total handsets shipped in China in November.
In the 11-month period from Jan-Nov 2023, 206.58 mln handsets from domestic handset brands were shipped in China, flat YoY, accounting for 79.2% of total handset shipments. During the same 11-month period, shipments of smartphones comprised 249.59 mln, or 95.7%, of total handsets shipped in China.
During the month of November, 30 new handset models were released in China, down 30.2% YoY and 40.0% MoM. Of the total new handset models released during the month, 19, or 63.3%, were 5G models, 11, or 36.7%, were 4G models, and none were 3G or 2G models; 24, or 80.0%, of the new handset models were from domestic brands, and 22, or 73.3%, were smartphone models.
In the 11-month period from Jan-Nov 2023, 415 new handset models were released in China, up 8.9% YoY; of this total, 203, or 48.9%, were 5G models, 208, or 50.1%, were 4G models, and 4, or 1.0%, were 3G or 2G models. Of the total new handset models released from Jan-Nov 2023, 380, or 91.6%, were from domestic brands, and 337, or 81.2%, were smartphone models.
Editor's Note: CAICT's statistics cover domestically produced, domestically shipped handsets from both Chinese and foreign brands, but do not include imported handsets or exports of domestically produced units. Only handsets shipped through official channels are included, meaning grey market or knock-off handsets are not covered in CAICT's figures. "Shipped" means only that the manufacturer shipped the handset to a wholesaler or retailer, where it may or may not have been sold to a consumer during the month under discussion.
