NCAC Discusses Microsoft Anti-piracy Campaign

Southern Metropolitan News, 10/28/08

Yan Xiaohong, deputy director of the National Copyright Administration of China (NCAC), said that while he understood and supported Microsoft's legitimate attempts to protect its own IP rights, the legality of the company's recent "black screen" campaign was still under discussion. Microsoft China responded by saying that it would "listen attentively to comments from relevant government authorities," and signaled that it would consider lowering prices.

Yan stated he believes that Microsoft ought to consider what Chinese users can accept when setting prices for its products.

Editor's Note: Under the so-called "black screen" campaign, users with a pirated version of Windows who install the Windows Genuine Advantage update on their computer will have their desktop automatically turned black every hour.
