PC Vendors Compete for Mobile Operator Contracts

New Express, 12/11/08

After news that domestic operators might seek to procure netbooks, a number of PC manufacturers reportedly sent netbook demonstration models to operator headquarters for evaluation.

A spokesperson for consumer electronics manufacturer BenQ (2352.TW) revealed that BenQ had participated in the procurement and contacted China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) and Guangdong Mobile. The spokesperson predicted that if the netbook plans do go through, orders could number in the tens of thousands.

Xu Kaijun, GM of HP Data Products' Telecom Operations Communications and Marketing Department, confirmed that HP had recently signed an order with Guangdong Telecom, and predicted that HP computers, including mini super-portables, would be bundled with a number of Guangdong Telecom services, allowing telecom customers to receive free computers upon signing up for a phone plan.
