Flat-panel TV Sales Growth to Drop Below 30% in 2009

Data from the China Electronics Chamber of Commerce shows that demand for flat panel TVs in 2008 was 12.2 mln units – 11 mln of those LCD TVs, the remainder plasma TVs.

Domestic brands led the market, with Hisense (600060.SH), TCL, Changhong (600839.SH), Skyworth (0751.HK), Konka (200016.SZ, 000016.SZ) and others taking a 55% share. Among foreign brands Sharp, Samsung and Sony performed well. Regarding distribution, in first- and second-tier cities, retail chains Gome (0493.HK) and Suning (002024.SZ) had a combined market share of 80%.

Demand is expected to increase approximately 23% to 15 mln units in 2009 – the first time annual growth will have had dropped below 30%.
