China Mobile, Unicom Reveal 3G Subscriber Targets

China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) had stated at the beginning of the year that it planned to develop a TD-SCDMA subscriber base of 10 mln in 2009, but as of June, it had less than 1 mln 3G customers. A source from China Mobile revealed that it had already dropped its internal target from the initial 10 mln to 3 mln subscribers.

Data shows that in Q2, China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) sold a total of 47,000 WCDMA terminals. Unicom has set an internal target of reaching 200,000 WCDMA subscribers by the end of October.

Editor's Note: In March, China Telecom's (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) chairman and CEO Wang Xiaochu stated that the company hopes to increase its mobile subscriber base by 30 mln this year, 10 mln of whom will be 3G subscribers.
