Sina Tech, 3/22/10

Sun Chaohui, general manager of China Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), China's national operator of CMMB mobile TV, has announced that CBC will soon officially release commercial use TD-SCDMA/CMMB handsets with China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK).

The handsets will still use a China Mobile phone number, but will require dual encryption keys - and connect simultaneously to both China Mobile's 3G network and CBC's CMMB network - in order to allow access to mobile TV programming.

Editor's Note: Zhang Haitao, deputy minister of SARFT, said this morning that the combination of TD-SCDMA and CMMB is an important part in the country's network convergence efforts. SARFT and China Mobile are scheduled to sign an agreement this afternoon to jointly pursue network convergence.
