China Unicom Releases Five RMB-1,000 3G Smartphones

Sina Tech, 6/23/10

China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) today announced that its first five "thousand-RMB" smartphones - the Nokia 5235, Sony Ericsson M1i, ZTE (0763.HK; 000063.SZ) X850, Huawei U8110 and K-Touch W366 - will begin hitting the market consecutively beginning June 25. Customers can opt from one of two plans to purchase the low-cost smartphones, either buying calling credit up-front in exchange for a free handset, or buying a handset and subscribing to Unicom's network in exchange for free calling credit. The smartphones retail for between RMB 800 to RMB 2,000. Unicom plans to release additional thousand-RMB smartphones from July through September.

Editor's Note: In a separate article, Sohu IT reported that users who sign up for Unicom's RMB 126 monthly 3G plan can receive an Android-based ZTE X850, which retails for RMB 1,180, for free. The X850 comes with a 2.8" touchscreen, a 3.2 megapixel camera, GPS, and Bluetooth.
