SARFT Aims for 100Mbps Broadband in 5 Years

China's State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT) has proposed a goal of reaching actual individual user connection speeds of 100 Mbps by 2015, as part of its plans to build a nationwide network, reaching a level of functionality and performance equal to that of the telecom networks.
SARFT began trials for its Next-Generation Broadcast (NGB) network in Shanghai in 2009, aiming to reach 500,000 users by the end of 2010. According to calculations from Wu Jiangxing of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, at a per-user investment of RMB 1,500, SARFT will see 200 mln households on its NGB network within 10 years at a total cost of RMB 300 bln.
