Rumor: SARFT Issues Two Additional Internet TV Licenses

CCID, 8/03/10

China's State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT) has reportedly granted two Internet TV licenses to Guangdong Southern International Media Advertising Co., Ltd., the advertising arm of Guangdong-based Southern Media Corporation (SMC), and Hunan Satellite TV. The licenses will allow both companies to "deliver audiovisual content programming integrated operation services via TV sets."

According to an industry source, SARFT has no plans to issue any additional licenses for an extended period of time, and will only issue additional licenses depending on the pace and demands of network convergence efforts.

A source within Southern International Media declined to comment, while sources at Hunan Satellite TV said they had not received any word on the matter from management.
