Rumor: SARFT to Release 3D TV Channel Standards

DVBCN, 10/19/10

China's State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT) is conducting a number of tests involving 3D TV, according to a source in the agency, and will soon formulate relevant standards. SARFT will likely require regional broadcasters to receive approval before launching 3D channels, which are likely to be premium channels.

Another source reports that 3D channels will most likely broadcast content aimed at high-end demographics, and trial broadcasts will not begin until after the Chinese New Year holidays in February 2011.

Previously, a source at SARFT's Academy of Broadcasting Planning said that Tianjin would host China's first 3D TV channel, but no further developments have been announced since. Zhao Guizhi, chairperson of China's Blu-ray Disc Association, said that it would be difficult to fully operate a 3D TV channel without at least 1,000 hours of content, and currently there are too few titles to launch such a channel this year.
