China Mobile Launches Wi-Mo Plan

Netease Tech, 12/14/10

At the 2010 International Mobile Internet Conference in Beijing yesterday, China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) joined a number of firms to launch partnerships on Wi-Mo technology and industry development. In attendance were Chinese telecom equipment manufacturer Datang Telecom (600198.SH), and electronics manufacturers Lenovo (0992.HK), Taiwanese electronics manufacturer Asus (LSE: ASKD; 2357.TW), Samsung, Chinese electronics maker Haier, CMMB and baseband chipset developer Innofidei, mobile sensor maker CyWee, HD chipset maker Silicon Image, communications device maker Marvell, networking chipset maker Broadcom, and wireless chipset maker Atheros.

Wi-Mo (Wireless Mobile Multimedia Transmitting) is shorthand for a new wireless multimedia transmission technology. China Mobile Research Institute deputy director Yang Zhiqiang said that the technology would support wireless, instantaneous, high-definition multimedia transmissions between mobile terminals and larger-screen devices, allowing for multi-screen sharing and interaction with mobile devices as a core component. Wi-Mo technology will allow users to synchronize video content from their mobile phones to televisions and other large-screen devices over Wi-Fi networks. Users will be able to play mobile games on their televisions, and to allow friends and visitors to join in the game.

Guo Xiaoyan, the China Mobile Research Institute's deputy director of terminals, said that China Mobile has already begun working with its partners to develop a Wi-Mo-based chip supporting 480P-resolution video, and that a 1080P HD chip is expected next year. Guo said that the operator would partner with Asus to launch an OPhone device supporting 1080P video.

The China Mobile Research Institute's terminals department will cooperate with China Mobile's game development base, and will work with other partners to develop Wi-Mo-based multimedia applications.
