China's Telephone Users Up 2.5% QoQ in Q2 2011

New figures from China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) indicate that at the end of Q2 2011 there were a total of 1.21 bln telephone users in China - up 2.54% QoQ - and that mobile phone use had grown fastest, with a total of 920 mln subscribers. Broadband penetration increased 24.6% YoY to reach 140 mln households.

The number of mobile applications and services grew to more than 100,000 in Q2, with software, games, and mobile literature applications growing especially quickly. The number of mobile literature app users reached 57 mln, up 229% from the end of 2010, and the number of registered mobile application store accounts passed 100 mln, up 257% from the end of 2010. A total of 35 mln mobile subscribers used mobile payment applications, up 195% from the end of 2010, and more than 35 mln subscribers used mobile video.

In Q2 2011, the MIIT received a total of 15,025 subscriber complaints through consumer rights organizations' hotlines and websites at the provincial, regional, and municipal levels, a QoQ decline of 0.9%. Customer service complaints accounted for 41.7% of the total, down 1.6 percentage points from the previous quarter. Among these, complaints about telecom operator fee changes and service cutoffs declined slightly. Complaints about network quality accounted for 21% of the total, up 1.8 percentage points QoQ, with increases in complaints about mobile signal coverage. Billing disputes accounted for the remaining 37.3%, 0.2 percentage points less than in the previous quarter, with the number of disputes about VAS subscription fees continuing to decline.
