China Telecom Targets Sales of 45 Mln Smartphones in 2012

Wang Xiaochu, chairman of China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) recently revealed at the 2012 China Telecom CDMA Terminal Supply Chain Conference that China Telecom's target for total 2012 terminal sales volume is 80 mln units, including 45 mln smartphones, or over 50% of the targeted total. Wang stated that in 2011, China Telecom's E-Surfing brand sold over 34 mln 3G-capable mobile phones, which is three times the 2010 figure.

In addition, Wang also revealed that mobile phones in the price range of RMB 1,000-2,000 seem to be the average Chinese consumer's preference. According to Wang, over 50% of consumers selected a phone in this price range. China Telecom's next focus area will be developing terminals in the RMB 700-2,000 range.
