Rumor: CMMB Operator CBC to IPO in 2014

Chinese mobile phone TV operator China Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) is undergoing corporate restructuring in preparation to obtain external funding through an IPO in 2014, according to an industry source. CBC has established a national CMMB network with subsidiaries in all 31 provinces and municipalities, covering 336 cities and 855 towns. The total number of users now exceeds 35 mln, of which paying users comprise 16 mln. Over 1,000 handset models suppport CMMB functionality.

Editor's Note: While CET reported that the total number of CMMB users now exceeds 40 mln, with paying users reaching approximately 16 mln and free users reaching 24 mln, this 40 mln figure conflicts with other recent reports saying that the total had reached 35 mln. In a telephone interview with Marbridge, Meng Fei, General Manager of CBC's Terminals Department, confirmed that as of the end of the Chinese Lunar New Year (i.e. Feb. 6), the official total was 35 mln.
