Rumor: NEC May Re-Enter China's Handset Market

CCID, 2/17/12

Japanese electronics firm NEC has reportedly quietly established a mainland China handset division, but NEC has yet to officially confirm the rumor.

The official website of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology's (MIIT) State Radio Regulatory Commission (SRRC), which approves and issues licenses to handset models to be sold in the mainland China market, lists the NEC808w, a GSM/WCDMA/WLAN(WAPI)/Bluetooth handset manufactured by NEC Casio Mobile Communications, as having obtained a National Wireless Electronic Equipment Model Authorization Number on December 23, 2011.

NEC's mobile operations withdrew from the China market in 2006.
