Huawei, ZTE Win China Unicom WCDMA Expansion Tender

China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) recently concluded bidding in its 2012 WCDMA network expansion tender. Chinese telecom equipment and terminal manufacturers Huawei, ZTE (0763.HK; 000063.SZ), and Alcatel-Lucent Shanghai Bell (ASB) won bids for system equipment, as did Ericsson and Nokia-Siemens Networks. Huawei and ZTE were the big winners, accounting for 60% of the total volume, with Huawei taking a slight lead over ZTE to become the biggest winner. The tender was announced in February 2012 and covers 100,000 base stations, making it Unicom's largest wireless network equipment tender in three years. The operator will spend RMB 6 to 7 bln on procurements for its network expansion.
