Baidu Establishes Multimedia R&D Department

Yu Kai, deputy technology director of Chinese internet company Baidu (Nasdaq: BIDU), today announced that Baidu has established a multimedia division, to be headed by Yu. The division already has dozens of employees and will offer multimedia APIs to third-party developers.

The new division will develop voice recognition and visual multimedia technology which will be integrated into Baidu's other products, according to Yu. The division's R&D efforts will be led by Baidu's chief scientist, Wang Haifeng, as well as Yu, who is an artificial intelligence expert. More than half of the team has PhDs, and the group will continue to expand its staff.

Baidu previously released a voice search client in April, followed by a voice input application in June that was developed by the multimedia division.
