Acer Delays Official Launch of Aliyun Smartphone

Tencent Tech, 9/13/12

A press conference originally scheduled for today by Taiwanese computer manufacturer Acer (2353.TW) and Alibaba Group subsidiary Alibaba Cloud Computing ("AliCloud") has been cancelled. A spokesperson said that the press conference, which had been intended to announce Acer's launch of an Aliyun smartphone, would be pushed back, but that no date had yet been chosen. The spokesperson declined to give the reason for the cancellation.

Editor's Note: AliCloud subsequently issued a statement claiming that Acer had been forced to cancel the event in the face of pressure from Google. Google reportedly warned the company that it would begin to charge patent licensing fees for Android if Acer were to release an Aliyun handset.
