ZTE May Release Mobile OS in Q4 2012

Sina Tech, 9/18/12

He Shiyou, VP of Chinese telecom equipment and terminal manufacturer ZTE (0763.HK; 000063.SZ), recently disclosed that though ZTE currently uses both Windows Phone and Android, the company will likely release its own self-developed mobile OS in Q4 2012 due to uncertainty about the future of the industry, particularly regarding patent disputes.

ZTE has applied for more than 10,000 patents to date both domestically and abroad, including over 7,100 domestic handset patents.

Regarding sales channels, He said that over 10% of ZTE's domestic handset sales are via non-operator channels, with non-operator e-commerce and wholesale/retail channels tending to focus on mid-range and high-end products, while operators favor RMB 1,000 smartphones.
