Xing Hongyu, GM of Shenzhen-based internet company Tencent's (0700.HK) Tencent Microblog division, revealed today that as of the end of 2012 the service had 540 mln registered users, and an average of more than 100 mln active users per day.
"Our primary goal remains the development of a service platform," Xing said. "Tencent Microblog does have revenues at the moment, but has not yet begun to break even." Tencent Microblog currently relies on traditional advertising for revenues, Xing said, but the company hopes to introduce a new form of advertising in the future.
