MIIT Expands Mobile Number Portability Trials to 3 More Provinces
Chutian Metropolis Daily, 8/04/13
Yuan Ruiqing, Head of the Hubei Provincial Communications Bureau, announced today that the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has approved the launch of mobile number portability projects in Hubei, Jiangxi, and Yunnan. Users in these three provinces will be able to change their mobile carriers without changing phone numbers. Beginning on April 1, 2014, number portability trials will be fully implemented in Hubei's capital city of Wuhan, and will remain in effect for one year.
China first launched mobile number portability trials in Tianjin and Hainan. To date, a total of 207,000 users have applied for number portability, but only 59,000 users have succeeded in transferring their numbers. In order to transfer his number, a user must satisfy multiple provisions stipulated by his carrier. Furthermore, number portability may involve changing handsets.
