MIIT: RMB 2 Trln Needed to Reach 'Broadband China' Goals

Shang Bing, Vice Minister of China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), has revealed in a recent interview that China will need to invest RMB 2 trln between now and 2020 in fixed broadband and mobile broadband infrastructure in order to meet the country's "Broadband China" goals. According to Shang, focus needs to be placed on optimization of oversight mechanisms for China's three major telecom operators, with the goal of guiding broadband investment toward central and western rural regions.

In its recently released Broadband China strategic planning report, China's State Council has outlined development objectives including fixed broadband users reaching 400 mln by 2020 and 3G/LTE users reaching 1.2 bln.
