CMA Partners with Alibaba Cloud Computing to Compute Clouds

TechWeb, 5/27/14

Chinese e-commerce conglomerate Alibaba Group's Cloud Computing subsidiary AliCloud has partnered with the China Meteorological Administration's (CMA) Public Weather Service Center on the use of big data for weather forecasting and other purposes. Meteorological data will be analyzed by AliCloud's cloud computing platform in order to provide weather insight for the CMA.

The CMA Public Weather Service Center plans to analyze more than 60 years of historical weather data, as well as data taken from over 20,000 meteorological stations across China and satellites and radar covering historical water levels, temperature, wind speed, ground ice, solar radiation, acid rain, air quality and visibility, among 30 different categories. AliCloud will provide technical assistance, and help to jointly establish the "China Meteorological Services Cloud" to provide enterprises in need of meteorological data with professional meteorological data services.

AliCloud will promote the use of meteorological data through: 1) partnering with affiliate digital map provider AutoNavi (Nasdaq: AMAP) on the use of precise weather data in the latter's mapping services; 2) partnering with Alibaba's Cainiao smart logistics subsidiary on providing services for Cainiao platform users which include but are not limited to warehouse site selection and fire hazard prevention; and 3) granting database access to other Alibaba subsidiaries.

The CMA's website will be gradually moved onto the AliCloud platform. In addition, Alibaba Group will provide weather alerts and warnings through various mobile platforms such as its messaging services Laiwang and Alitalk, mobile payment app Alipay Wallet, and the AutoNavi mobile navigation app.
