Rumor: Baidu to Launch TV Gaming Platform

Sina Tech, 6/23/14

An industry insider has revealed that Chinese internet company Baidu (Nasdaq: BIDU) plans to launch a "Baidu TV Gaming Platform," targeting the smart TV gaming market. The platform will reportedly look to address smart TV game controller compatibility issues through the release of a smart TV-facing software development kit (SDK). Hardware compatibility issues are common in China's smart TV gaming market, as the wide variety of Android-based set-top boxes (STB) and smart TVs on the market do not offer universal compatibility with many game controllers.

According to the source, Baidu may also be planning to release a "virtual controller" feature that will transform smart handsets and other electronic devices into virtual game controllers.
