Alibaba, Shanghai Automotive Partner on Connected Car

China Business Journal, 8/04/14

Chinese e-commerce conglomerate Alibaba Group has forged a strategic alliance with the Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation, with the two sides jointly announcing plans to launch an "internet car," work together on related app services, and create an entire ecosystem for the car.

The car will come integrated with Alibaba's YunOS operating system, big data technology, Ali Telecom MVNO brand, subsidiary AutoNavi's mapping technology, AliCloud computing systems, and online music website Xiami. Shanghai Automotive will be responsible for developing the car itself and spare parts and provision of servicing. Together, the companies aim to provide customers with an entire internet-connected mobile smart ecosystem within the car.
