ChinaCache to Use Youku Tudou's Wi-Fi Routers as CDN Nodes
DoNews, 8/26/15
Content delivery network (CDN) service provider ChinaCache (Nasdaq: CCIH) has reached a partnership with online video site operator Youku Tudou (NYSE: YOKU) to use Youku's Wi-Fi routers as a storage device for network content. Through smart distribution software developed by ChinaCache, the Youku Wi-Fi CDN router will be able to schedule network access and page requests while directing traffic for end-users.
More specifically, ChinaCache will store content on free space available on Youku's Wi-Fi routers, and when users attempt to access content, the CDN will choose the optimal route to retrieve the content. The system will collect user access data, including behavior, location, and browsing history, to analyze consumer browsing habits in order to push content the user may find interesting.
Youku Tudou has approximately 250 mln monthly active users, and through the partnership with ChinaCache, the two companies hope to turn every Youku user into a CDN node. If that happens, Youku users will be able to use ChinaCache's internet accelerator technology and create a virtual CDN with more than 100 mln nodes.
The Youku Wi-Fi Router will most likely be sold to consumers as part of a package deal, however the details of the package have yet to be revealed. Youku and ChinaCache's partnership will also explore and share technology for the distribution of apps and game acceleration technology.
