Baidu's Online Encyclopedia Adds Support for Short Videos
DoNews, 4/29/16
Chinese internet company Baidu's (Nasdaq: BIDU) online encyclopedia "Baidupedia" (Baidu Baike) has added a function to integrate short videos in encyclopedia entries along text and pictures.
Baidu will prioritize adding the feature, dubbed Miaodong Baike, to the 30,000 most popular searches on Baidupedia before June. The company is also developing a tool for users to upload videos and a mechanism for displaying them. Baidu predicts that Miaodong Baike will cover 100,000 entries by the end of 2016 and videos will be viewed 8 mln times daily. Baidupedia will also explore integrating augmented and virtual reality technology to its entries.
Baidupedia has begun looking at how to commercialize its service, such as linking encyclopedia entries with services covering hospital reservations, movie ticketing, and tourist attraction ticketing. When users search for information on the encyclopedia, Baidu will offer direct links to purchase or book the services.
Baidupedia is a user edited platform, and currently has more than 13 mln entries, 5.8 mln editors, and 400 mln daily page views.
