China Telecom Signs Purchase Orders for 67 Mln Smartphones

China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) has signed purchase order confirmations for 67 mln smartphones worth approximately RMB 10.7 bln with a variety of sales channels, including smartphone manufacturers, chain stores, and national sales agents at the opening ceremony of the "2016 E-Surfing Smartphone Trade Fair."
China's telecom operators sold approximately 194 mln handsets in H1 2016, revealed the general manager of China Telecom's marketing department, Liu Ping. Of this total, China Telecom sold 51.3 mln handsets, up 1.4% HoH, accounting for 26.4% of the market. Of China Telecom's total handset sales during the period, 47 mln were 3G or 4G handsets, propelling the operator into second place in this category. China Telecom's subscriber base has surpassed 200 mln.
In H1 2016, 85% of all of China Telecom's handset sales came from 12 handset manufacturers, including Huawei Technologies (18.1%), Apple (15.9%), Oppo (13.9%), and, following in order of share, Vivo, Samsung, Yulong, Hisense Communications, Bihee, Gionee Communication, Meizu Technology, Xiaomi, and ZTE.
China Telecom is planning to focus on five major areas going forward: video apps, sales channels, handsets, smart home, and Internet of Things.
