China Mobile to Complete EDGE Networks

Sohu IT, 11/22/07

A source close to China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) has said that the RMB 35 bln GSM network expansion launched in June is drawing to a close. China Mobile now has EDGE coverage in all major cities, providing download speeds of 60-120 kbs. However the service is currently only available via data card, not to subscribers of GoTone, Shenzhouxing and M-Zone voice services.

Adding EDGE coverage costs 20% as much as moving to WCDMA, meaning that China Mobile may not provide WCDMA services, but opt instead to compete for the 3G market with EDGE and TD-SDCMA.

A number of manufacturers have announced support for EDGE. ZTE's (0763.HK; 000063.SZ) latest ZXG10 8000 base station will include a software upgrade to support EDGE. Ericsson has also undertaken to support EDGE in 2009.
