Rumor: Hon Hai to Sell iPhone in Mainland from April

ChinaByte, 1/06/08

According to reports in the Hong Kong and Taiwanese media, Taiwan's Yuanta Research Center has said that Hon Hai Precision Industry won mainland distribution rights for the iPhone, but not Apple computer products, and that the company is currently testing a new 2.75G iPhone due to be released in China in April this year.

Yuanta's Chen Lifeng said that according to preliminary estimates, the iPhone may sell 5 to 10 mln units on the mainland during its first year of sales.

Hon Hai earlier denied that it had won general mainland distribution rights from Apple. Hon Hai spokesperson Edmund Ding today also denied the news that the company had acquired distribution rights for the iPhone in Mainland China.

Editor's Note: It was recently rumored that Hon Hai had obtained general distribution rights for mainland China from Apple Computer. For more background, please see "Hon Hai to Distribute for Apple in Mainland", MD 1/04/09 issue.
