Sogou Pinyin Input Sues Tencent for Unfair Competition

Chinacourt.org, 6/23/09

Beijing No.2 Intermediate People's Court has agreed to hear a case filed against Tencent's (0700.HK) QQ Pinyin Input Method alleging the company has engaged in unfair competition with the pinyin input method software developed by Sogou, a subsidiary of Sohu (Nasdaq: SOHU). According to court documents, Tencent employs disruptive technology to prevent users who download and use the QQ Pinyin Input Method software from simultaneously using the Sogou software. At the same time, the Sogou software is placed in a position after the QQ software when users are choosing an input method.

In addition to compensation of RMB 20.51 mln, Sogou has also requested that a public apology be posted on Tencent's main page and in the Chinese law magazine "Legal Daily" for a period of one month.
