MediaTek to Launch App Store Targeted at Mainland China

Sina Tech, 9/10/09

According to Taiwanese media reports, an industry source has revealed that Taiwanese wireless semiconductor manufacturer MediaTek will release its own mobile app store aimed at the Mainland China market, called "Vogins App Store."

According to the source, MediaTek has already secured deals for over 800 games and applications, and will release a smartphone priced under RMB 1,000. MediaTek has said that in addition to iPeer Multimedia's digital music platform, the company has also spent USD 2.5 mln to acquire a 75% stake in Vogins Technology, a Shanghai-based mobile application middleware provider.

MediaTek also plans to take advantage of its self-developed mobile operating system to offer smartphones for approximately USD 100, or under RMB 1,000, without needing to subsidize the sticker price. According to the source, further information will be revealed in Q4.
